A thesis project examining the wellness industry.

A thesis project aiming to uncover the reality of the profitable, trendy wellness industry and the dangers it holds. It includes honest, subliminal packaging and advertising for products such as essential oils and vitamins in order to highlight the side effects and lack of credible testing of these products.

Three posters including information on the dangers of products from the wellness industry. The illustrations use unnatural colors and harsh shading, but each subject is posed as if in a traditional beauty advertisement. This theme carries through my whole thesis. All of the imagery and packaging incorporates stereotypes from advertisements in this industry but with a twist to separate the two.

Two animations visualizing the overuse of vitamins and essential oils. As cited in my posters, a majority of Americans use vitamins either daily or on a regular basis, but less than a quarter of Americans needs them. A majority of the supplements taken have little to no effect on the body but they can cause some side effects. Similarly, essential oils are often used in cases of serious illness in place of needed medication.

Packaging for a trio of essential oils. The three oils selected are some of the most commonly misused and have detrimental side effects. As a play on traditional essential oil packaging, the trendy style was kept but the front of the labels list out the aforementioned side effects in order to be more honest.
